A university campus tracked water, gas, and electricity through three separate systems with different logins, formats, and reporting schedules. Getting a complete picture was nearly impossible.

Three systems, three silos

The university's facilities team managed utility consumption across a campus of 22 buildings through three completely separate platforms: an electricity monitoring system installed five years prior, a water management tool added during a sustainability initiative, and a gas sub-metering system that reported through the building management software. Each system had its own login, its own dashboard format, and its own reporting schedule. Producing a unified utility picture for management reporting required a facilities analyst to manually export from all three, reconcile the timeframes, and assemble the result in a spreadsheet — a process that took the better part of a day each month.

Standardising the data feeds

Conexie's first task was mapping the data sources and establishing reliable ingestion paths for each. Electricity data came from existing data loggers with an available API. Water data was held in a legacy system with no API, so Conexie configured an automated export via SFTP that ran nightly. Gas data required a custom connector to the building management system's reporting module. Each feed was normalised to a common time resolution — five-minute intervals — and loaded into the Conexie platform on a unified timeline.

A single operational view across all utilities

Once all three data streams were flowing, Conexie designed dashboards that presented electricity, water, and gas consumption side by side for each building. The facilities team could now see, for any building and any period, how all three utilities were tracking — without switching systems, reformatting data, or waiting for a monthly report. Trending anomalies that crossed utility boundaries — for example, a building where electricity was normal but water consumption was elevated, suggesting a process or equipment issue — became visible for the first time.

Anomaly alerting across utility types

Conexie configured threshold alerts for each utility type at each building, based on historical baseline consumption. When any meter's consumption exceeded its expected range for the time of day and day of week, an alert was sent to the relevant facilities contact. In the first three months of operation, the alert system flagged a water flow anomaly in a building that turned out to be a slow leak in a hydronic heating circuit — a fault that had been running undetected and was accumulating cost across both the water and gas meters.

Management reporting in minutes

The monthly reporting process that previously consumed a day of analyst time is now a five-minute export from the Conexie platform. The facilities manager can generate a building-by-building utility summary, a campus-level trend view, or a period-on-period comparison in the format required for the university's sustainability reporting — without any manual data assembly. The platform has also provided the data foundation for a utility cost allocation model that the university's finance team uses to attribute costs accurately to faculties and departments.
