Case Study

Embedded Energy Network for 21 Tenants

Background

A commercial property owner approached us with a complex challenge — managing solar and grid billing across an embedded network of 21 tenants. The building featured a large shared solar system on the roof, designed to offset tenant consumption, but accurately allocating solar generation and billing tenants fairly had become a logistical nightmare.

Challenge

The primary challenges were multifaceted:

  • The property had a single large solar system, meaning solar generation needed to be carved out proportionally for each tenant based on their consumption.
  • The site required a revenue-grade metering solution that could be deployed across all tenant connections with minimal disruption to operations.
  • The landlord needed a billing solution that allowed tenants to be billed automatically on their behalf, while maintaining transparency, compliance, and accuracy.
  • Finally, there was a desire to improve solar performance monitoring and tenant awareness — ensuring both the landlord and tenants could see real-time usage and generation data.

Objective

To deliver an integrated system that could:

  1. Seamlessly collect and calculate tenant energy usage and solar allocation.
  2. Generate accurate, automated bills for all tenants on behalf of the landlord.
  3. Provide transparent reporting and performance visibility for both landlord and tenants.

Solution

We began with a detailed discovery phase to map the property’s electrical layout, understand the metering constraints, and design a robust data and billing architecture.

Once the groundwork was set, we implemented a revenue-grade metering system, installing one certified meter per tenant connection — with minimal downtime and disruption. These meters fed data into Conexie’s platform, where we built an automated calculation engine to:

  • Aggregate grid and solar data,
  • Carve out each tenant’s share of solar consumption,
  • Reconcile total site generation and grid import/export, and
  • Produce finalized, bill-ready data for invoicing.

We then layered on a custom billing module that enabled the landlord to generate compliant invoices on behalf of tenants. The system supported variable rates, tariffs, and service charges while automating recurring invoicing and payment tracking.

To close the loop, we provided an interactive solar and consumption dashboard. This gave tenants real-time insight into their energy mix — how much of their consumption came from solar vs. grid — promoting awareness and accountability.

Results

The new embedded network solution completely transformed the landlord’s operations.

  • Hundreds of manual processing hours were eliminated annually.
  • Billing accuracy improved dramatically through automated validation checks.
  • The landlord now operates a fully compliant, transparent, and scalable billing system for all 21 tenants.
  • Tenants gained greater awareness of their energy consumption and solar impact, fostering sustainability engagement across the site.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates how Conexie can bring simplicity and automation to even the most complex embedded network environments. By uniting metering, solar allocation, and billing under one intelligent system, we delivered a solution that saves time, improves accuracy, and empowers both landlords and tenants with meaningful energy insights.
